The image up is a schematic flow diagram of a typical oil refinery depicting various unit processes and the flow of intermediate products between the inlet crude oil feedstock and the final products. The diagram depicts only one of the hundreds of different configurations.
It does not include any of the usual facilities providing utilities such as steam, cooling water, and electric power as well as storage tanks for crude oil feedstock and for intermediate products and end products.
An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where petroleum (crude oil) is transformed and refined into useful products such as gasoline (petrol), diesel fuel, asphalt base, fuel oils, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas and petroleum naphtha.
Petrochemicals feedstock like ethylene and propylene can also be produced directly by cracking crude oil without the need of using refined products of crude oil such as naphtha. The crude oil feedstock has typically been processed by an oil production plant. There is usually an oil depot at or near an oil refinery for the storage of incoming crude oil feedstock as well as bulk liquid products. In 2020, the total capacity of global refineries for crude oil was about 101.2 million barrels per day.
Hydrotreating, Hydroprocessing, or Hydrodesulfurization is a process
in which the petroleum feed stream reacts with Hydrogen at high
temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst, to remove the
impurities Sulfur, Nitrogen, Oxygen, metals, chloride, etc. In the
mid-1950s, the first naphtha catalytic hydrodesulfurization was
commercialized to produce clean feed for the platforming plant. After
that, numerous proprietary catalytic hydrodesulfurization processes,
have developed. Currently, almost all petroleum oil refineries have one
or more hydrotreating units.
The purpose of the Hydrotreament process in an oil refinery is;
- To treat the final petroleum product like Kerosene, diesel, or naphtha
- To prepare feed for the next unit like naphtha for the platforming unit
- To produce an ultra-low sulfur product to meet environmental standards.
The new generation of refineries
Petrochemical Refinery is considered a new generation of refineries and emphasizes the integration between refining and petrochemical complexes.
In fact, in petroleum refinery complexes, the goal is not only to produce fuel, including liquid gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil, and fuel oil, but also special products and feeds needed by polymer and chemical complexes are also produced and supplied. In petrochemical complexes, crude oil is fed as feed to several process units to produce a combination of fuel and petrochemical base products.
This has caused petrochemical complexes to require the use of special process units due to the simultaneous production of fuel and other basic petrochemical products. The actual crude oil refining capacity of the country is 1 million and 802 thousand barrels per day.
During the past years, planning has been done to increase the refining capacity of the country to 3,840,000 barrels per day.
The review of the latest situation indicates that the current situation of the country's refining industry in terms of both quantitative and qualitative development is far from the optimal situation and the first level of the world standard.
From the point of view of quantitative conditions, it can be considered that despite the passage of a decade since the definition of new refinery plans, none of them have been put into operation. In terms of quality production, the country's refining industry has not been able to act correctly in front of environmental actions, including the promotion of new quality and environmental standards, changes in the consumer market.
So that according to the defined plans, in 2015, Iran should be considered as the exporter of the main hydrocarbon products of the region. It should also be mentioned that in the past years, the refining industry has been solely responsible for the fuel needed by the country, while this industry should seek to realize the movement of reducing crude sales along with the petrochemical industry.
Oil refineries are usually large, sprawling industrial complexes with extensive pipes running throughout, transporting streams of fluids between large chemical processing units and such as distillation columns.
In many ways, oil refineries use major mechanical, electrical, physical, chemical, and catalytic technologies and can be considered as types of chemical plants with continuous and 24-hour operation. A refinery is always in operation unless it is shut down for major repairs.
An oil refinery is considered an essential part of the downstream side of the petroleum industry.

In many
ways, oil refineries use much of the technology and can be thought of,
as types of chemical plants.
Once crude oil is extracted from the ground, it must be transported and
refined into petroleum products that have any value. Those products must
then be transported to end-use consumers or retailers (like gasoline
stations or the company that delivers heating oil to your house, if you
have an oil furnace). The overall well-to-consumer supply chain for
petroleum products is often described as being segmented into three
components (shown graphically in Figure 2.1).
Since December 2008, the world’s largest
oil refinery has been the Jamnagar Refinery owned by Reliance
Industries, located in Gujarat, India, with a processing capacity of
1.24 million barrels (197,000 m3). Some modern petroleum refineries
process as much as 800,000 to 900,000 barrels (120,000 to 143,000 cubic
meters) of crude oil per day.
oil and gas production is conducted by companies who identify, extract,
or produce raw materials. Downstream oil and gas production companies
are closer to the end-user or consumer. Here's a look at upstream and
downstream oil and gas production, their individual functions, and what
role they play in the broader supply chain.
Upstream oil and gas production and operations identify deposits, drill wells, and recover raw materials from underground.
The midstream sector covers transportation, storage, and trading of
crude oil, natural gas, and refined products. In its unrefined state,
crude oil is transported by two primary modes: tankers, which travel
interregional water routes, and pipelines, which most of the oil moves
through for at least part of the route. Once the oil has been extracted
and separated from natural gas, pipelines transport the products to
another carrier or directly to a refinery.
Petroleum products then
travel from the refinery to market by tanker, truck, railroad car, or
more pipelines. Tankers deliver petroleum by transporting oil and
refined products from other countries to the U.S. to make up the
difference between domestic products and demand. Tankers also transport
oil along the Gulf coast.Midstream is a term used to describe one of the three major stages of
oil and gas industry operations. Midstream activities include the
processing, storing, transporting and marketing of oil, natural gas.
The two other major stages are upstream, which refers to raw crude oil
and natural gas production, and downstream, which refers to the refining
of crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet, and other fuels.
Downstream operations are the processes involved in converting oil and
gas into the finished product. These include refining crude oil into
natural gas liquid ,gasoline, kerosine, diesel, and a variety of other energy sources. The closer an oil and
gas company is to the process of providing consumers with petroleum
products, the further downstream the company is said to be.
Companies in the downstream sector are those that provide the closest
link to everyday users. After crude oil is discovered and extracted—the
upstream process—it's shipped and transported—the midstream process.
Thereafter, the oil is refined, marketed, distributed, and sold, which
is the downstream process. However, the refining of crude oil to petroleum products may be conducted in midstream operations.
